Amenda Speaks Math To Caleb

Amenda scrunched her eyebrows and her pewter eyelashes fluttered.
Caleb was transfixed by the high-pitched, whirring sound.
She took a deep breath and finally began speaking. “Eight
times eight is sixty-four and you know that four times six
is twenty-four, plus we must consider five minus three equals
two and…” Speaking Math was how she would now conceal her
inner world from him. Caleb’s heart sank as he listened.
Amenda was speaking faster and faster. He watched in
amazement as her whirring eyes and mouth
finally blended into shrill, white noise.
